How to brief a BTS crew so the footage is actually usable
Most behind-the-scenes footage dies on a hard drive. Not because it was shot badly, but because nobody decided what it was for before the camera turned on. A BTS unit without a brief produces an archive. A BTS unit with one produces a month of content.
Here is the short version of what we ask for before a shoot day.
Decide the output first, not the coverage
“Get some BTS” is not a brief. The useful version names the deliverable: one 60-second recap film, eight vertical cutdowns, and a stills set for the press kit. Once the output is fixed, coverage decisions make themselves — we know whether we need clean audio, whether faces need to be recognisable, and whether we can shoot wide and grab crops later.
Say who can be filmed, and who cannot
Every set has people who cannot appear on camera: a guest artist under embargo, a brand rep, a family member. Getting that list before the day is faster than getting it in the edit, when the only fix is cutting a good sequence.
Name one person who can approve on the day
BTS moves faster than the main unit and the moments do not repeat. If our operator has to find the manager to ask whether they can film the writing session, the writing session is over. One named person with the authority to say yes is worth more than an extra camera.
Protect fifteen minutes
The best BTS frame on most shoots is not a candid — it is a deliberate setup that took a quarter of an hour. The artist at the monitor. The crew resetting a light. The room going quiet before a take. Blocking fifteen minutes in the schedule for two or three of these is the single highest return you can get from a BTS budget.
Agree the turnaround before the shoot, not after
A BTS recap that lands three weeks after the campaign has nothing to attach to. Decide up front whether you need a same-night teaser, and if so, plan for the operator to hand off a card mid-shoot rather than at wrap.
